   painter
   Born in Paris, Charles-André Van Loo, or Carle Van Loo, as he is known, was the student of his brother jean-baptiste van loo, with whom he worked at the château of Fontainebleau. After winning the prix de Rome (1723), he left for Italy and worked in Turin at the palace of the duke of savoy. Returning to Paris in in 1734, he was named painter to King louis XV in 1762; his renown was comparable to that of François boucher, and he was considered for a time the master of the French school. Remaining attached to the tradition of the "grande manière" (historical, biblical, and mythological subjects), he painted oblique compositions, with declamatory effects, particularly in his religious works (L'Adoration des bergers for the church of Saint-Sulpice, Paris); he imitated Rubens and Van Dyck but often omitted their luminosity. Carle Van Loo is less conventional in his mythological scenes, gallant paintings, genres, "turqueries," and portraits (Louis XV).
